Israel isn’t that stupid, or at least I hope it isn’t.

Israel isn’t that stupid, or at least I hope it isn’t.

Israel holds Judea and Samaria having captured it from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan — which had illegally annexed it after seizing it during the 1948-1949 war — after Jordan started a war against Israel by opening fire and shelling “West” Jerusalem during the June 1967 war. As a matter of international law, notwithstanding what the know nothing propagandists claim, Israel has title to the land it captured from Jordan. Moreover, under UN Security Council Resolution 242, which is binding upon all UN member states, Israel is entitled to retain possession of the territories it captured from Jordan until secure and recognized boundaries are negotiated with its neighbors, at which point, Israel is to withdraw from those territories from which its withdrawal has been negotiated. If the Palestinians want to claim a right to seize a portion of those territories without Israel’s agreement, without negotiating with Israel — whcih the PA has refused to do for most of the past 2 years — and in violation of UNSCR 242, they should be prepared to pay a price for their actions.
Just because the Europeans wish to treat Israel like the Jew among nations and abuse Israel the way they abused their own Jewish populations for centuries does not mean that Israel is required to do nothing to defend itself. The Jews tried that method of getting along for two millennia. We are not going back to it now.

The fact is that a new Palestinian State would be a hostile state, as far as Israel is concerned. Presently, the PA relies on Israel for a number of services, including banking, which Israel feels obliged to provide.

Other items of note: Would the UNRWA finally leave the area? Would the foreign aid keep pouring in?

Most certainly, this would not lead to peace. Rockets would still be launched from Gaza, terror attacks would still be planned by the PA. The only thing that would change, is that no one else in the world has to officially care.

IMO, all posturing and theater.

No peace deal will be painless for anyone.

Israel has been forced to deal with these dysfunctionals. There will be no happy ending.

The one thing on which I might disagree is the statement that I highlighted. If the UN recognizes a Palestinian state, and elects to treat it as a Member State under the UN Charter, then other Member States would, by definition have to officially care when acts of war (or, in the parlance of the UN Charter, a “breach of the peace or act of aggression”) are committed.

Really? I wasn’t aware that words and treaties mean anything anymore.

re: #4 researchok

It’s theater if the PA doesn’t do anything in September. If that is the case, in the words of Emily Latella, never mind.

There has been no happy prelude, nor is there a happy present. The choice is merely between less bad alternatives.
